Prenatal Yoga

Practicing prenatal yoga whilst pregnant, is it safe ?

Yes, not only is it safe but it can also be very beneficial for both mother to be and baby. Prenatal yoga is an exercise that is designed to promote posture, breathing, and emotional relaxation in pregnant women. Many pregnant women who are preparing themselves for childbirth or those who wish to stay physically fit and emotionally healthy during their pregnancy have begun to practice prenatal yoga.

Pregnancy is one of the most important events in a woman’s life. So it stands to reason that she should want the very best of conditions for herself and her baby. Prenatal yoga is one of the methods that many pregnant women will employ to ensure this happens. Yoga can be quite helpful in preparing a women for the rigor's of childbirth. It is a good way of keeping fit and helps to diminish the likely hood of problems during pregnancy.

One of the many benefits of prenatal yoga is that the amount of physical exertion that is required is minimal, which makes it a safe practice for many expectant mothers. For some women, prenatal yoga may be seen as part of a spiritual process that helps them to bond with their unborn child and to help them mentally prepare for the birth of their child. Even after the baby's birth prenatal yoga may still be beneficial as it teaches much needed relaxation techniques, which, as all new mothers will soon come to realise, are much needed.

Women who practiced yoga before becoming pregnant will no doubt want to continue the exercise. But because of the changes that the body undergoes during pregnancy, it will not always be possible to continue do certain yoga poses like before. It is important to inform the instructor of the pregnancy so that he or she can modify the exercises to to ones which are more suitable for pregnant women.

During the early stages of pregnancy is usually the time when the feelings of fatigue, nausea and dizziness are more prevalent. This is usually going to be the best time to work on exercises that concentrate on the breathing and relaxation techniques.

Later on, as the pregnancy progresses, many of the earlier feelings and discomforts will have subsided and it is then that the prenatal yoga exercises which are most suitable for strengthening and stretching can be practiced. It goes without saying that at this time the exercises should not be too strenuous and the pregnant woman should not push herself too hard. This is especially so during and immediately after the birth.

Prenatal yoga techniques are especially helpful in the final stage of pregnancy, as they will help to get the mind into a relaxed, stress free state, ready to cope with the intensity of the labour contractions and birth.
