Morning Sickness

Morning sickness can be one of the first signs of pregnancy, although in truth the term "morning sickness" is a bit of a contradiction due to the fact that it doesn't just strike in the morning. Feelings of nausea and sickness can, and sometimes does, occur at different times throughout the day (and night) for no apparent reason. It is generally accepted that women are more prone to feeling sick in the morning because they have woken up with an empty stomach.

Many expectant mothers will keep a packet of Crackers or Biscuits and a glass of water at their bedside for when they wake up as this tends to combat the sickly feeling that they experience. It is recommended that small light snacks be consumed at regular intervals throughout the day, rather than one large meal, as this helps to counteract the feelings of nausea.

Morning sickness, or all day sickness as it should properly be known, generally occurs in the early stages of pregnancy although some women can suffer for the whole term. Strangely enough their are many mothers to be who never experience feelings of pregnancy related sickness.

Feeling nauseous and queasy can happen from the very beginning of pregnancy, which is why it is seen as one of the early signs of pregnancy or it can develop as the pregnancy progresses. It is not known for certain what is the cause of morning sickness, but it is thought that it is a combination of the imbalance in the hormone levels and the body changes that occur during pregnancy. It could possibly just be the body gradually rearranging the stomach in anticipation of the new life that will shortly be growing within. Your doctor or health practitioner may advise you to take a prenatal pill or some other form of vitamins which can make some women feel sick after taking.

There are a several ways that are recommended to help minimize sickness, but what is effective for one may not work on another. Some women prefer to nibble crackers or dry biscuits whilst others like to chew nuts or raw carrot. Chewing anything ginger is another favorite for many mums to be, especially good seeing as how ginger has often been used as remedy for nausea. Carbonated water or ginger ale seems to be able to calm the queasiest stomachs down. Dry cereals are another good thing to eat, small portions, eaten often is a good way to keep your stomach settled. Drinking plenty of liquid helps to keep you from becoming dehydrated, a dangerous situation for both you and your baby..

Smells are another cause of morning sickness. The smell of grease, perfume and cigarette smoke are known to easily set off a bout of sickness. Try to figure out just what smells are likely to set you off so that you may avoid them.
